Design of the Queen's Beasts Completer Coin
The Queen's Beasts, the symbolic statues representing the lineage of Queen Elizabeth II, were proudly positioned in front of Westminster Abbey's temporary western annex during the Queen's coronation in 1953. Each of The Queen's Beasts stands as a heraldic beast supporting a shield, each bearing a badge or arms tied to the ancestral lineage of Queen Elizabeth II. Sculptor James Woodford was commissioned by the British Ministry of Works to create these statues, which were uncolored except for their shields during the coronation. They now hold a place of honor in the Canadian Museum of History. Additional representations of the Queen's Beasts, also known as the King's Beasts, can be found at Hampton Court Palace, Kew Gardens in London, and adorning the roof of St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle.
The reverse side of the coin centrally features a petite circle showcasing the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, crafted by Jody Clark (which is also presented on the obverse). Below this is the designer's signature, J.C, set against a thin chain-mail patterned backdrop. Around this, the inscription "THE QUEEN'S BEASTS" is penned, and below this is the metal's content and the year of issue, "· 1 oz FINE GOLD · 999.9 · 2023 ·", partially obscured by some of the beasts' paws.
Encircling this, in ten sectors, are the portrayals of all ten Beasts in the series, each of which was separately depicted on a prior coin; in clockwise order from the top:
The face value is on the obverse side.
