Design of the 2023 British Britannia Coin
The British Britannia silver coin features a portrait image of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the front, facing to the right. Encircling her portrait are the coin's face value of £2 GPB, and the words 'Elizabeth II'. The reverse side of the coin features an image of Lady Britannia walking on the shores of Britain, with a trident in one hand and a shield in the other. The coin's year of minting, size, purity and metal type all encirlce the image on the coin.
Lady Britannia is an image that first appeared on coins when Britain was part of the Roman Empire. Since then, she has appeared several times on coins. In 1988 her image was introduced again onto the Britannia series of bullion coins issued by the Royal Mint. The Britannia series was first launched in gold, and followed in silver and platinum. The coin is the most popular bullion coin issued by the government of the United Kingdom. Silver British Britannia coins are available individually, in tubes of 25 coins, and in monster boxes of 500 coins.
Due to the Queen's death in 2022, 2023 will likely be the last year that these coins feature her image. The Britannia series is scheduled to be updated with an image of King Charles III at some point within the next year.
